DEMOLITION VS DECONSTRUCTION

Demolition is about rapid removal of a structure, often for redevelopment, whereas deconstruction emphasises sustainability through salvaging materials for reuse or recycling. Each method has its place depending on the project’s financial viability, goals, timeline, and environmental considerations.

The process required for demolition relies on heavy machinery, multiple truck movements and bulk disposal. It may involve specific techniques like the use of a high reach or traffic management requirements. Its main advantage is that it tends to be a more cost effective option that benefits clients with both time and financial restraints.

Deconstruction is more of a methodical process which involves manual labour to carefully dismantle structures. It allows you to generate a lower environmental impact by; reducing your carbon footprint, reusing salvaged materials and effectively recycling the accepted materials for repurpose.

If minimising your environmental impact is important to the project, then deconstruction would be for you. It can significantly reduce the waste generated from your project, provide you with reliable reporting and support your sustainability efforts. Unfortunately this decision for environmental sustainability through deconstruction makes it a less cost efficient option and may require a longer timeframe.

PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT

The construction and demolition industry produces 40–50% of New Zealand’s total waste going to landfill. This significant volume underscores the challenge of managing waste responsibly.

We tackle this challenge head-on with our clients in the aid for social responsibility. Instead of simply demolishing structures and adding to landfill volumes, we carefully dismantle buildings, salvage reusable materials, and redirect them towards meaningful purposes wherever possible. These materials often find new life supporting local charities or initiatives that aid underprivileged communities.

Collaborating closely with partners to seek smarter ways of working and who share our vision for a more sustainable future, we explore innovative solutions and best practices to promote waste reduction. Integrating these practices into our operations, we strive to lead by example and inspire positive change within our community, our industry and beyond.
